Renowned Versatile Artist

Ghayyur Akhtar was born in 1946 in Lahore, after his education he started his career in late 1970s from Radio Pakistan and his exceptional talent brought him to a TV screen. He started with small roles in acting on Ptv and kept on with consistency. But it wasn’t till the 1980s when fame found him. His performances in drama serials ‘Khwaja and Sons’ with Ali Ejaz and with Hamid Rana and Sheeba Butt in Munnu Bhai’s Sona Chandi, Ghayyur Akthar was picked by public specially his exclamation of “o ho ho ho ho” became iconic and talk of the town. His other drama serials like Free Hit, Ghar Aya Mera Perdesi, Afsar Be-kar-e-Khas, and Sitara were also highly appreciated by viewers. Latterly, his powerful role of Sanwri Jadugar in the drama serial Ainak Wala Jin was most popular amongst children..



Career As TV, Stage, Film Actor

After a reasonable recognition in Ptv he was picked by the film makers as while popular on the small screen, his work on the silver screen brought him plaudits as well. 

One of his most famous films was Irfan Khosat’s Direct Havaldar in which he played the role of jailer that is still memorable among cine-goers. Being form the world of creativity, apart from his career in front of the camera, Ghayyur Akhtar also wrote stage plays. Kutkutarian was his first stage play which he has written as play writer. In that period utilizing the stage experience, he also hosted the TV programmes like Lahore Lahore Ae,

and many more. After decline in the silver screen in late 1990s Ghayyur Akhtar once again joined TV and gave some wonder performances like he acted in Sitara, which was another classical PTV drama. In Afsar Bekar-e-Khas he was cast against actors such as Nawaz Anjum, Zulqarnain Haider and Agha Abbas and delivered very well.



Honors and Awards

Due to his extravagant performance throughout his career especially in Sona Chandi’ to ‘Ainak Wala Jin’, earned him the President’s Pride of Performance Award.




Demise of the Artist 

Latterly he was hosting a show Wah Wah in a private channel as Choudhry Sahib, when he was paralyzed in 2011 which affected his physical free movement but instead getting it on his nerves he kept on working for Radio Pakistan from his house. On February 6, 2014 he was evacuated to the Services Hospital Lahore as his condition deteriorated last night but next day he took his last breath. Ghayyur has left behind two sons and a widow.

Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervez Rashid expressed his heartfelt condolence over the demise of Ghayoor Akhtar. In a statement, the minister said Ghayoor was a great artist whose art and work will be remembered by the people for many years to come. He prayed to Almighty that his soul rests in eternal peace and that his bereaved family would bear this irreparable loss with fortitude.
