Suraiya Shahab

Former News broadcaster Suraiya Shahab died in Islamabad on September 13, 2019. She was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for the last few years. On same day, she complained of stomach ache and her son was taking her to a private hospital but she died on the way. Ms Shahab was laid to rest in a local graveyard later in the afternoon. Her funeral was attended by a large number of people. She leaves behind two sons and a daughter and lot of friends and admirers to mourn her death.

Surraya Shahab was one of the pioneer newscasters of the country. She had done her masters in journalism and political science and was doing her doctorate in political science but had to put it on hold after being diagnosed with cancer. She started her broadcasting career in the early 60s with Radio Pakistan. Later she went to Iran and joined Radio Iran Zahidan where she hosted a programme which became an instant success. People would wait for the programme which opened with the line, “Awaaz ki dunya key dosto ye Radio Iran Zahidan hai”. In 1973, she returned to Pakistan and joined Radio Pakistan and PTV as a newsreader. Later, she joined BBC Urdu Service in the mid 1980s and shifted to London. She also worked for Voice of Germany in the late 90s. Muhammad Khalid, son of Suraiya Shahab once intimated that she was working on a book on poetry and other subjects but could not complete it due to her ailment. He said she was a cancer patient and after operation, suffered from critical health issues, including Alzheimer’s..

 

Tanvir Kazmi

Renowned film writer Tanveer Kazmi passed away on September 6, 2019 in Lahore after illness. His funeral prayers were offered on same day at Lahore. Tanvir Kazmi was a successful film writer of golden era of Pakistan film industry and lot number of super hit films are on his credential.

 

 

Abid Ali

Veteran actor Abid Ali passed away, following a prolonged illness, on September 5, 2019. Popular for his decades-old acting stint in the Pakistani entertainment industry, Abid Ali was aged 67. He was under treatment for a liver ailment at a private hospital in Karachi since the last two months. Born Abid Sher Ali in 1952 in Quetta, the legendary actor worked as an actor, director, and producer. Recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Abid Ali started his career at Radio Pakistan before going to Lahore to launch himself as a successful artist.

Faisal Munawar Zarif

August 20, 2019
The only son of Legendary Pakistani actor Munawar Zarif, Faisal Munwar Zarif died on August 20, 2019. He died at Macca while performing Umra due to heart attack. He appeared in two films, Puttar Munawar Zarif Da and Puttar Jeerey Blade da but could not achieved the heights like his father Munwar Zarif. So he moved to London, UK and finally settled there along with family.

 

Zaheen Tahira

Legendary Pakistani actress Zaheen Tahira passed away in Karachi on July 8, 2019, she was 79. She was admitted to a city-based hospital last month due to cardiac issues. Laterly, put on a ventilator and was then shifted to the critical care unit (CCU).Zaheen Tahira was one of the most senior actors in the history of Pakistan’s television, Tahira starred in over 700 drama serials in lead and supporting roles. She was known for playing strong characters mainly on Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) Karachi center from the late 1960s to 1980s. Tahira fronted Pakistan’s record breaking serial “Khuda Ki Basti” in 1969 by Shaukat Siddiqui. The show went on to get its re-telecasts in 1974 and 1990. Zaheen Tahira received the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in recognition of her work in the Pakistani entertainment industry in 2013.

Acclaimed playwright and fiction writer Dr. Anwar Sajjad passed away in Lahore on June 6, 2019. He spent his final hours at his residence on Raiwind Lahore and breathed his last after a prolonged illness. He was laid to rest at the Miani Sahib graveyard here on June 7, 2019. Niaz Ahmed

Renowned singer and composer Niaz Ahmed Khan passed away in Lahore on May 29, 2019.
Niaz Ahmed had been sick for a long time, making him unable to remain in touch with the music industry. His condition further deteriorated on May 28, 2019 following which he was put on a ventilator but he breathed his last in afternoon on next day. Niaz Ahmed is ranked among the finest music directors of Pakistan as he has composed songs for a number of acclaimed singers like Madam Noor Jehan, Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali.He belongs to the ‘Kirana Gharana’ and was groomed by his uncle, Ustad Maulana Abdus Shakoor Khan. Niaz Ahmed was awarded the President of Pakistan’s Civil Award Pride of Performance in 2014.

Anis-ur-Rehman

Veteran comedy actor Anis-ur-Rahman, popularly known as Anis had died in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He breathed his last at the age of 78 at his Tikatuli residence on April 28, 2019. Anis was suffering from old-age complications for long time. The first namaz-e-janaza of the popular comedian took place at Tikatuli Jamia Mosque April 29, 2019. Later, his body was taken to Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) where his second janaza was held. Then, he was laid to rest at his family graveyard at Ballabpur village of Feni’s Chagolnaiyya April 29, 2019 after the third namaz-e-janaza. Anisur Rahman started his acting career in 1963. His first released film was Ei to Jibon directed by Zillur Rahman. Then, he never looked back and performed over 250 films. Anis acted in many programmes on Bangladesh Television since its inception. He was a theatre actor too. He rose to fame in the genre playing the character Ghulam Hussain in the play Nawab Siraj-ud-Doula.Ei to Jibon, Poishe, Mala, Jorina Sundori, Jongli Maye, Madhumala, Bhanumati, Padma Nadir Majhi, Shurja Othar Age, Odhikar, Anger, Barood, Ghor- Shongsar, Emiler Goenda Bahini, Puroshker, Lal Kajol, Nirdosh, Shanai, Ujan- Bhati, Talak are some of films on his credential.

Former film actress Seema died on March 14, 2019 in Lahore. Seema was her film name whereas her actual name was Shamim Kousar. She started her film career from Urdu film Meh Khana which was released September 4, 1964. Mostly she appeared in second or supportive roles in her young age whereas afterward she played the character actor roles in Punjabi film like Moula Jat in which she played the role of Bhabi of Sultan Rahi. Seema‘s childless matrimonial life was proved a failure so she spent her last years in hand to mouth situation.

Veteran film actor Khawar Butt died on February 5, 2019 in Lahore after heart attack. His funeral prayers were held at after Zuhar prayers on same day and was buried at Miani sahib grave yard, Lahore.

Well-known actor Ghulab Chandio died on January 18, 2019 at his home in Karachi after a long illness at the age of sixty one. According to his sons, Mr Chandio was a heart patient with chronic diabetes. His family rushed him to a hospital from their house in Gulshan when his condition deteriorated. However, on their arrival at the hospital, the doctors pronounced him dead. He is survived by four daughters and two sons.
