Azad – Seasoned character actor
Muhammad Hanif Qureshi was born there at Dehli (India). Since his childhood he had the inclination toward creative art so after basic education he moved to Bombay which was at that time the hub of cinematic activities. With very high hopes to join Bombay film industry once he landed there he was unable to find any approach leading towards his goal. Finally after lot of struggle in 1944 he got a minor role in Najam Naqvi’s film Panna which was his debut film. This was the time when Pakistan movement was at its peak. Muhammad Hanif Qureshi who landed in Bombay film industry with cinematic name as Azad had very affectionate feeling for leader of Pakistan Movement specifically Quid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinah. And when he found a chance to serve Quid as his personal driver he immediately quit all his cinematic activities and had the honor to get close to the Quid-e-Azam.
He migrated to Pakistan permanently after 1947 and joined Anees Pictures which was production house of actor and director Nazir but after release of Sachai he left Anees Pictures. When Ragni Art Concern which was owned by Aslam the husband of actress Ragni produced Kundan, he gave a major role to Azad as father of Ragni in Kundan. Afterward he appeared in Pinjra, Do Ansoo, Dopatta, Qatil, Nazrana, Kanwari Bewa, Faisla, Apna Paraya, Maska Polish, Zanjeer, Fanoos, Koel, Kholona, Aurat Aur Zamana, Hum Aik Hain which was produced by Jameela Razaq and directed by renowned writer and lyricist Fayaz Hashmi, Koun Kisi Ka, Himmat, Mere Mehboob, Dard-e-Dil, Aag Ka Darya, Banjaran, Baghi, Sepahi, Tum Miley Piyar Mila, Raat Ke Rahi, Pazaib, Joker, Mere Bachey Meri Ankhen, Koh-e-Qaf, Anjaney Rastey, Ladla, Jeene Ki Rah, Ehsan, Dosri Maa, Lutera, Phool Aur Kante, Janbaz, Mehndi Lagi Mere Hath, Qatil are his popular film.
In personal life Azad had very close attachment with Muhammad Ali. As the story revealed, in 1958, once young Muhammad Ali moved from Hyderabad to Karachi in pursuit of his dreams and to explore its cinematic world. At Karachi he met Azad who after listening his story sent Muhammad Ali back to Hyderabad by saying that this field is suitable for him due to his religious family background. So Muhammad Ali returned back to his `1reakthrough from the film Charagh Jalta Raha. Afterward once Azad met Muhammad Ali who was in his establishing era so Azad supported him in his whatsoever capacity and they became good friends. Even Muhammad Ali declared Azad as his elder brother. Once Muhammad Ali and Zeba got married on September 29, 1966 it was Azad’s house at Nazimabad Karachi where their Nikah ceremony was held confidentially. Subsequently, once Azad came to Lahore, Muhammad Ali provided him all moral and financial support even he provided him with the accommodation. Muhammad Ali’s financial support remained continued during retired life of Azad till his demise.
Bankok Ke Sholey was his last film in which he appeared in character actor role in 1986
During his struggling days he came closer to actress Kalyani and they fell in love each other which finalized on their marriage.
Demise of the Artist
Muhammad Hanif Qureshi famous as Azad who was spending his retired life in area behind Waheed Murad road, Karachi died on September 11, 1986.
