Showbiz Highlights of 1950

With the induction of Agha G.A.Gull, many notables joined film industry as financers. Like choudhry Meraj Din who belonged to a renowned Gujjar family of Lahore, established film distribution office named Ever Lucky. Producer of Hichkoley Sheikh Muhammad Hussain who had a leather business in Misri Shah, lured in his cussion Sheikh Latif and they made Noubhar Films. While hiring Anwar Kamal Pasha who had already assisted Shahida and Hakeem Ahmed Shujah Pasha as story writer, produced Do Ansoo which was released on 17 April 1950 and that did very well. Do Ansoo became first Pakistan Silver Jubliee urdu film.

Director and actor Zahoor Raja shifted from Bombay and produced Jahad which was based on the story of Kashmir movement but it didn’t work.

Masood Pervez who also migrated from Bombay and directed Ghulami there under Shalimar Studio made a Punjabi film Beli but excessive publicity caused a failure to this project. Alrai the son of Hakeem Muhammad Din Arain, collaborated a cycle dealer of Neela Gumbad Lahore and made Humari Basti which was another flop film. These movies were released in Regent cinema and Nishat cinema respectively. Like wise Do Kinaray was also proved another flop which really disturbed Nasir Khan and Suresh, resultantly both the disappointed actors left Lahore and shifted to Bambay.

ghabrooOn the other hand Nazir Ajmeeri and Master Ghulam Haider migrated from Bombay where they have released Majboor under Bombay Talkies. So on this credit they joined with Sindhi feudal S.Gull who had already played some Sindhi movies and made a production house named Filmsaz. Which produced Beqarar released on 17 July 1950 but in spite of good music and cast credit it was a flop movie. Like wise Malika Pukhraj made Shimmi but the dynamic music of Master Inayat Hussain and artistic direction of Munshi Dil were not able to made Shimmi a success. These all movies faced a failure end primarily due to the release of Indian films.

Anyhow in 1950 total thirteen movies were released and only one Punjabi film Laaray and Do Ansoo met success. Although Nazir produced Anokhi Dastan but it proved a mediocre film. Here it is worth mentioning that Nazir was in comparative advantage as his all films were also released in India because his cousin Kailash who was running a distribution office there at Bombay in India.
