Ban is imposed on Maalik

The Ministry of Information, Broadcasting, and National Heritage issued a notification declaring the Urdu feature film “uncertified” according to Section 9 of the Motion Pictures Ordinance, 1979.Director of the film Ashir Azeem also confirmed the ban. The film, released three weeks ago, had generated complaints regarding its controversial depiction of the Taliban and parallels with the assassination of a prominent government official by his personal security guard. Initially Sindh government decided to ban the film Maalik and then revoked that notice all in the space of a few hours. However, before it was formally issued, the Sindh chief minister intervened and asked the ministry not to issue it as it would be ‘against the freedom of expression’. The film team had assured the Sindh government objectionable scenes would be cut, but the film’s certification was revoked as it wasn’t done.

Another Oscar – Sharmeen Obaid

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy has won an Academy Award for best short documentary titled A Girl in the River. It is her second Oscar after Saving Face. A Girl in the River is the latest in a series of socially charged investigative films from Sharmeen’s Karachi-based film company SOC Film. Focus of film revolves around an 18 years old girl named Saba who eloped to marry a young man to whom she loved. Her father opposed the decision of his daughter and asked her to reconcile. On arguments, her father and uncle beat her, shot her in the head, put her in a bag and threw her in a river. As per their stance she had brought dishonor on her family and that they had done the right thing. Amazingly, Saba survived and was able to get help. However, while her father and uncle were arrested, authorities had to drop the charges because of provision in law that allows perpetrators to go free if the victim – or the victim’s family forgives them. Facing intense pressure from the male elders in her community, Saba was forced to forgive her father and uncle, and abandon her hope for justice. Saba’s powerful story is told in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness.
